Rockin' In The Village
So I haven't posted a blog in a while... but thought I'd share how pleased I am with the Blue Mountain Village! Not only is it a great place to vacation, but they've got some kickin' concerts going on... Just this Saturday passed I got to see the band 54-40 there! The Watchmen opened for them, which was pretty cool, but grooving to 54-40 is what really made my weekend. They played some of my old favorites, like "Ocean Pearl", and the frontman chatted it up with the audience and voiced his feelings on war which I wholeheartedly agree with i.e. Bring our boys back!!

If you're in the Georgian Triangle area, head up to the Village and check out the talent.

Tips For Getting (and Keeping) That Job!
Facebook is a popular internet application that we are all familiar with, but did you know that more people might be accessing it than you realize? Specifically, potential employers! In fact employers are more and more likely to Google your name and locate your Facebook profile, Twitter updates and yes, even your Blogs! Here's some useful tips to avoid incriminating yourself on Facebook while you are looking for that dream job:
- adjust your privacy level so that only your friends can see your info
- untag yourself from unflattering (ie. partying) photos other people have posted
- go through your own photos and remove incriminating photos
- check what groups you belong to and remove yourself from groups that an employer may find offensive
- delete your posts and status updates that contain excessive swearing
When it comes to Twitter and blogging, make sure you only post information that you would feel comforatable having broadcast to everyone you know, including employers. Because if everyone else is on board with technology and the internet, then you better believe your future employers are too!
Good luck!

Of Monkies and Men...
Why are some men more aggressive than others? What causes this aggression? Some studies (information retrieved from http://www.warandgender.com/wgmaleag.htm) have shown that testosterone levels increase not just in preparation for competition (such as a sports match, a chess game, or any type of task) but also increase after completion of the task. However, the increase in testosterone does not appear to occur in the loser of the competition, but the winner. Furthermore, testosterone increases were correlated with winners' perceptions of themselves more than the outcome of the game. For example, in a study of chess players, testosterone levels increased 10% in matches where the players were closely rivaled, but when chess games were perceived to be easy wins, testosterone levels of winners matched that of losers (down 10%).
Similar results have been found in studies of rhesus monkeys. Researchers wondered if testosterone levels in the monkeys predicted status and hierarchy within the group. They did not. However, once hierarchy was established, testosterone in the leader rose drastically. After fighting, the loser monkey would experience about a 10% drop in testosterone.
What does all of this mean? That testosterone levels play an integral role in reflecting changes in status. This phenomenon occurs in men, but does not occur in women. Testosterone and androgen levels remain unaffected when women are in competition with each other.
For more information on this topic please refer to the original source: War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa by Joshua S. Goldstein (Cambridge University Press, September 2001).
My suggestion? If men can harp on women for our hormonal moments, using the term "she's PMSing", then it seems only appropriate for us to be able to harp on men when they act like competitive, over-bearing animals. What should we call this phenomenon? TTSing? (Ten-percent Testosterone Syndrome?) MMSing? (Monkey-Man Syndrome?) I say that they are both fitting terms and being scientifically based, I am coining them as actual terms we can use to identify and discuss this syndrome. I encourage anyone else who agrees with me to feel free to use the terms TTS or MMS when encountering this male hormonal phenomenon. I know I will!

RE: RFID
Someone responded to my blog on RFID technology by pointing out that not only has animal tagging been going on for years, but also that people have been piercing themselves with metal all over there bodies for years, and that in both instances there has been no reported evidence of the negative impacts of inserting (sterile) foreign objects into living creatures. Here's my response!
You bring up an interesting point! I was thinking more on the lines of the radio-frequencies effects on living creatures more than the actual physical chips. But you are absolutely right that I should investigate it a little further and back up my fears with some stats!
I found that some studies have been done on the "Biological Effects From Radiofrequency Non-Ionizing Radiation" and some effects found were:
EEG brain waves in humans were altered from exposure to cell phone signals. Mice that were exposed to these signals also began to develop irreversible infertility. Other effects of radiofrequency waves on humans were decreased motor function, memory and attention of children and adults, an increase in childhood leukemia from AM-FM exposure, negative changes in the immune system, 18% interference in REM sleep, and a 26% drop in insulin (Wave-guide.org).
Now these effects were all found from different experiments, with varying levels of radiofrequency waves, however, the implications of having radiofrequency devices inside of us seem considerable. Especially when our brains are such delicate wave devices themselves!
I think it would be interesting to further investigate these studies in detail and the effects of radiofrequency levels over time. Here’s the link I found those stats on - if you want to check out the individual studies then take a gander and by all means let me know what you think!
